What is HBCD?
Highly Branched Cyclic Dextrin (HBCD), also known as Cluster Dextrin, is a form of complex carbohydrate derived from corn starch. It was designed to provide fast-absorbing, yet sustainable energy, during exercise.
Here's why we love HBCD and how it can benefit your performance:
1. Low Osmolarity:
Meaning the solution will be absorbed faster without drawing too much water into the intestines. This will reduce the risk of stomach discomfort (like bloating and cramping), allowing faster delivery of energy to the working muscles.
2. Sustained Energy:
HBCD is a complex carbohydrate that has a relatively low glycemic index (GI) of about 20-30, which is significantly lower than alternative carb sources used in sports drinks like maltodextrin and dextrose. HBCD therefore delivers energy to the muscles at a more controlled rate, maintaining blood sugar levels.
3. Increased Hydration:
When combined with electrolytes and water, HBCD can increase the rate of hydration, due to it's rapid gastric emptying and absorption properties. The lower osmolarity of HBCD will ensure excessive water is not drawn into the intestines which is often associated with slower fluid absorption.
4. Increased Endurance:
The result of rapid absorption, sustained energy and optimal hydration? Increased endurance - allowing you to sustain a high level of effort for long durations.
Our signature Endurance Fuel contains 20 g of carbohydrates from HBCD per serve, and we recommend you take it before, during or after your workouts as required to perform at your best and recover like a pro.
